Galata Tower vs Maiden's Tower: Which Istanbul View Is Worth the Ticket?
Istanbul's two most famous viewpoints are both on the water and almost nothing alike. One is a fourteenth-century Genoese tower with a queue at the bottom and a 360-degree deck at the top. The other is a small islet a few hundred metres off the Asian shore, reached by shuttle boat. Here is how the visits actually compare.
The short answer
- Galata Tower is the better view and the easier visit — it sits in the middle of the European side, minutes from Karaköy.
- Maiden's Tower is the better experience — the boat crossing is half the appeal, and standing on a rock in the strait is unlike anything else in the city.
- Galata Tower has a genuine queue, worst in the two hours before sunset.
- Maiden's Tower costs the ticket plus the boat, and the last return crossing governs your day.
- If you have time for one, take Galata Tower. If you have a spare afternoon, Maiden's Tower is the more memorable hour.
Galata Tower: the climb
Built by the Genoese in 1348 as part of their colony's fortifications, the tower has been a watchtower, a fire lookout and — in the seventeenth century — the launch point for an attempted manned flight. Today it holds a museum below and an observation deck above, reached by lift and a short flight of stairs.
The deck wraps 360 degrees around the top of a 63-metre tower, which makes it the single best place in the city to learn the geography: the Golden Horn to one side, the Bosphorus to the other, the whole historic peninsula laid out beneath you. Sunset is the coveted slot and the reason the queue forms.
Maiden's Tower: the boat
The tower sits on an islet a short distance off the Üsküdar shore, and the visit starts with a shuttle boat from the mainland. Inside there is a small exhibition and a café; the real draw is standing in the middle of the strait with a skyline on both sides.
Plan around two things: the boats run to a timetable rather than continuously, and the last return crossing ends your visit. Check the day's schedule before you commit, and budget about an hour in total.
Choosing between them
- Short on time and want the classic panorama — Galata Tower.
- Already know the city and want something different — Maiden's Tower.
- Travelling with children who will not queue — Maiden's Tower; the boat does the heavy lifting.
- Photographing the old city at golden hour — Galata Tower, and arrive an hour before sunset.
- On a tight budget — walk the Üsküdar waterfront instead. The view of the tower from Salacak is free, and it is the shot on the postcards.
How each fits into a day
Galata Tower belongs to a Beyoğlu day: come up from Karaköy, walk İstiklal Street towards Taksim, and finish in the meyhanes around Asmalımescit. Maiden's Tower belongs to an Asian-side afternoon: ferry to Üsküdar, walk the waterfront, take the shuttle boat out, and come back for dinner in Kadıköy or Kuzguncuk.
Doing both in one day means two long crossings with most of the city in between. It is possible, but it is not the pleasant version of either.
